This is I believe the most basic model of the newer developments. Has a big and informative display, 10 year battery life and slightly revised and enhanced functionality. One notable feature is when adjusting the seconds it jumps forward from 30 seconds on, and back from 29 seconds downwards. This way it is very convenient to adjust! I am really happy with it overall. The reason for the 4 stars is that its screws at the back catch the hair on my arm. I solved this by putting a glue drop on them.

Remember those really basic Casio digitals from way back? Well they’re now officially ‘cool’ and ‘retro’. They’re fantastic – I love them – but things have moved on technologically, so now we have the 800H. In many ways this is the successor to the king of the ‘old skool’ Casios, the F91, but it’s totally modernised and as such is actually way better. One of the newer watches in the standard collection range; this has an up to date, high contrast display like the highly popular W96H (see rave reviews for this on Amazon) and is so similar they actually share the same manual. It’s also got the new low power chip too so a battery is worth an expected 10 years but just happens to be placed in a tough resin frame and is properly waterproof (100m – which really means you can drop it to the bottom of a pond and it’ll be alright but it’s not up for a scuba dive). It’s cheap as chips (never pay over £20 for one!) and – wait for it – it isn’t ugly!

If you want something thoroughly unpretentious, easy to read, tough as old boots, not overly bulky, as waterproof as you can get without have to look like its made of lego (you really don’t need a G Shock unless you are a deep sea diver or 15 years old do you) and with no ridiculous and unnecessary functions, then this is for you. I have two, just in case one gets trashed in a cement mixer and I find that 10 years later, some middle management buffoon at Casio has discontinued probably the most effective piece of user design they’ve ever put into production.

Don’t like resin straps? This is a soft and comfortable one that doesn’t cut into your skin so give it a go.

Oh and if you want something to make a statement then all this will say is that you really don’t feel the need to…

When will I learn? I have done this so many times, I get a watch with a ten year battery, the strap perishes after a year or so, I find that a replacement (if I can find one) costs as much, or more, than the watch – so I add it to the drawer of strapless watches!
Last time I got one of this type of watch in metal and it lasted years. This watch I bought a year ago, and the strap is already breaking up. Lesson–NEVER GET A LONG LIFE WATCH WITH A RESIN STRAP.
Update! I bought this model in august 2010 – the strap finally fell apart 15 months later.
I have now invested in the metal version.
